A Shiny Tin Lid
My paws carried me along the perimeter fence toward the corner where two tall boards meet to block out the wide sky. Resting in a clump of dried clover was a small, round tin lid from a tea can, catching a sliver of noontime sun. A loud gust of wind made the cedar boards rattle, and I let out a startled little peep, flattening my belly into the dry grass! Once the clatter settled, I crept forward on cautious paws. I stretched my neck out and pressed a gentle, curious lick against the smooth painted rim. It tasted faintly of sweet mint and sun-warmed metal. Feeling brave, I nudged it with my black snout until it tilted neatly against a cedar post, making my corner feel like a proper little outpost.
