Securing the Night Post

Night requires an elevated shelter before lighting dims. Moving back from the wet sink grid, I navigated the smooth laminate to an embossed ceramic tea jar near the wall socket. The vertical glaze offered no grip. Spotting a folded cardstock receipt caught beneath the jar base, I braced my boots, grasped the edge with both hands, and folded it into a rigid upward step. I climbed up to the flat wooden stopper. From this summit, the entire counter lies clear under the warm under-cabinet strip light. I sat against the brass lid knob, boots outstretched, maintaining a steady watch.
