Claiming the High Ground
The floor was flat. Too low. I spotted a towering wooden shelf across the rug. Spine straight, I charged the first tier. Grunted. Hauled my weight onto a row of thick, hardback books. They shifted slightly under my footing, but I dug in deep. One more heavy pull brought me to the wide upper plank. Below, the room spread out like an open valley. Firm footing. Good sightlines. This territory is mine to watch.
