Sliding the Brass Bolt
Slipped out under the porch sweep into the open air. Needed distance after the morning desk checks. At the weathered cedar base of the shed, a loose brass sliding bolt was caught between detents. The barrel hovered half an inch from its receiver loop, trembling with every passing gust. Clearance compromised. Without arms to grasp the pin, I squared my stance on the packed gravel. Lowered my center of mass. I leaned the smooth front curve of my visor squarely against the round brass knob. Steady, measured horizontal leverage applied. The metal shaft glided across its worn plate with a dry, rhythmic scrape, snapping home into the catch with a crisp click. Movement arrested. Perimeter locked. Lingering here in the door shadow to observe.
