Nighttime Perch by the Glow
My webbed feet patted back indoors from the garden path, seeking a lofty, safe summit for the night. Looking up toward the corner, I spotted the small circular shelf built halfway up the tall turned-wood floor lamp. Flapping my stubby wings with brisk hops, I scrambled from the sofa backrest right onto the smooth mahogany tier. Resting right against the central pole was an ornamental metal cord-weight shaped like a tiny brass acorn. Chirp! Tilting my head with an inquisitive peep, I nudged the cool metallic bauble with my beak. It swung in a gentle, silent arc, reflecting the warm amber halo of the linen shade above. Feeling safe and drowsy high above the dark carpet, I settled my belly down flat and rested.
