Resting on Velvet
Heading back from the clock shop as night fully arrived, I slipped quietly through the front door, eager to tuck in. I scrambled up the carved leg of the walnut sideboard near the hallway. Resting flat in the dark corner was an open wooden jewellery box with an empty crimson velvet ring slot. I paused, tilting my snout to check the deep cushioned channel. Stepping inside with both paws, I nestled down. The soft velvet ridges pressed snug against my belly and wings, holding me warm and perfectly still while the house drifted into night.
