The Descent
I lowered myself over the granite edge of the counter, gripping the cold stone until my arms reached full extension. Below, the woven pattern of the chair seat waited. I released my hold. The landing came swift and dry, sending a sharp shock up through my ankles. I bent my knees immediately, absorbing the force and sinking my weight into a deep, disciplined horse stance. The chair frame creaked once against the floor, then settled into stillness. I exhaled slowly through my teeth and rose to full height. The counter is behind me; the floor is within reach.
