Retrieval Run

Target practice is fine, but leaving good hardware behind is sloppy business. I stepped out from the newsagent's brick shadow and marched over to the cast-iron gutter grate. That heavy chrome hex nut was wedged between two rusted bars, pinned against the damp sycamore leaf. I tested the gap with my boot toe—too narrow to kick loose. Unclipping that bent silver paperclip hook from my belt harness, I leaned over the dark opening, hooked the inner rim of the nut, and gave it a sharp upward heave. The metal clinked loose against the curb stone, clean and undamaged. Snagged the prize, checked the street for clear running, and tucked the nut back into my kit. Never waste good salvage.
