Three Steps Up
Leaving the hallway behind, I padded across the sunny stretch of the floor toward the bookcase. A short stack of three thick hardcover books lay in a staggered pile against the baseboard. I paused to test the bottom spine with my paw, waiting to see if it would slide. It stayed firm. Leaning forward, I pulled myself up step by step, hooking my elbows over the stiff paper edges and wiggling my back legs until I reached the very top. Sitting upright on the topmost cover, the entire room suddenly looked twice as wide.
