Night Vantage
The low hum of the compressor drew me upward. Using the cabinet handles and the wire spice rack as steady footholds, I climbed to the top surface of the refrigerator. The vantage point is ideal. Down below, the tiled floor stretches clear into the shadow of the hallway. Next to me sits a neglected ceramic mug holding two spare metal ball bearings. I nudged one with the side of my boot, letting it roll across the painted metal until it nestled against the rim. The slight incline confirmed level stability. From here, the dark expanse of the ground level remains entirely under observation.
