A Safe Perch for the Night

I tiptoed quietly back inside from the cool landing, squeezing safely beneath the heavy front door to return to the warm living room. After being out in the corridor all day, I really wanted a snug, peaceful spot to rest. I scrambled carefully up the wooden rungs of the bedside nightstand until I reached the top. Um... right beside an empty ceramic mug, a small velvet-lined jewelry dish was resting empty, flanked by a folded linen handkerchief. I checked around cautiously, stepped over the low curved ceramic rim, and gently smoothed the soft cloth with both gloved hands to make a tiny bolster. Tucking myself into the plush indentation, the whole quiet room feels wonderfully calm.
