Square on the Stage
I waddled away from the prize counter toward a tall dance machine. Its stage was split into smooth metal tiles with bold, colorful acrylic arrows pointing in four clean directions. Nobody was playing. I paused at the bottom step, looking at the crisp neon grid. Waddling up onto the platform, I positioned myself right in the center of an unlit blue up-arrow. The cool acrylic surface felt flat and solid under my small feet. Standing aligned with the geometric point, I watched afternoon dust drift across the shiny metal stage.
