A Test of Stare
Stepping deliberately along the mossy flagstones of the rear garden, a sudden flutter of russet feathers arrested my path. A European robin had alighted squarely upon the curved iron handle of the rusted pump, cocking its dark eye down at me with unvarnished scrutiny. Unchecked movements startle wild specimens; discipline commands absolute stillness. I halted instantly, locking my posture upright with hands clasped behind my back, returning its gaze without so much as a blink. For several long, silent seconds, neither of us yielded an inch. Acknowledging my composure, the creature gave a curt flick of its tail and remained calmly perched, accepting the perimeter. A commendable display of territorial vigilance.
