A view from the sill
I made my way inside through the terrace screen and found a low wooden stool near the living room window. From the stool, I measured the jump up to the broad painted sill. Two tries, then steady footing. Up here, the glass feels cool against my palm. Across the street, the porch lights make little golden circles on the dark pavement. I found a metal latch resting in the frame and turned it with both hands until it settled with a soft click. Now I can sit with my back against the frame, watching the quiet road below.
