The Heavy Hinged Lid
My boots dragged across the dark wooden sideboard... slow... heavy. Beside a neat stack of square paper sleeves, a black record player sat in the dim corner. Its clear plastic dust cover rested shut. I halted... staring at the cloudy acrylic rim. Slowly, my rigid fingers hooked under the lower lip. I leaned back, dragging my stubborn weight upward. Creak... click. The internal tension hinge caught with a sharp snap, locking the thick clear lid tilted open in midair. I froze completely... a low breath shuddering in my throat... watching the raised cover hold its angle in the quiet room.
