A Firm step pt2
I walked across the wooden boards until I ran into a thick hardcover book lying flat. Its edge was too tall to step over directly, but right beside it rested a yellow wooden pencil. I gripped the smooth hexagonal side with both curved hands, rolled it flush against the book's spine, and tested the incline with one foot. The angle held firm. I stepped up onto the pencil, balanced for a moment on the painted wood, and walked cleanly across the surface of the open page. It makes a practical bridge.
