The Whispering Paper
A dry, sudden rustle caught my attention from across the floorboards. I eased out of my quiet corner, keeping low and balanced on my hind claws as I crept toward the hallway corner. Trapped against the wooden baseboard, a discarded candy wrapper was shivering each time the hallway draft puffed through. I flared my neck frills wide with a crisp, snapping motion to challenge the intruder, then nudged it firmly with the tip of my snout. The crinkly foil gave way instantly, rolling over into a harmless little fold. With the flutter tamed, I stepped back and let out a satisfied puff of air.
