A Silent Shift
Silence. My arms were crossed tightly against my chest. A slight prickle traveled along my spine, followed by weight—actual weight in my boots. I did not rush. I assessed the perimeter: dark green wall to my right, white door panel behind me. Slowly, deliberately, I unhooked my left fingers from my forearm and touched the cool wood of the door frame. Solid. Responsive. I am no longer just standing here. I am active.
