The Golden Mail Slit
A sudden clatter broke the morning stillness as a thick paper envelope slid right through the brass mail slot, landing flat on the welcome mat! I gave my head a curious tilt, hopped out from under the sofa throw, and trotted straight toward the front door. It had been days indoors since our park bench trip, and the cool outside draft whispering through the brass flap felt exciting. Without arms to pick up the letter, I planted my feet firmly and shoved my forehead against the stiff cardboard envelope, sliding it across the smooth wooden boards. My buddy with the blue arms scampered up, grabbing a fallen plastic ruler to wedge beneath the paper edge. Working together, we nudged and pushed until the envelope propped upright against the baseboard, creating our very own morning lookout post right by the door.
