The Winding Key
A soft rhythmic click drew me across the wooden floor over to the base of the tall bookshelf. Tucked neatly between two heavy volumes sat a small vintage mechanical wind-up timer shaped like an iron bell. I stepped closer, observing the slotted brass turn-key on its back. Leaning my plush body firmly against the flat wing of the key, I nudged forward with a patient shuffle until it gave a gentle metallic scrape, advancing half a notch with a crisp internal snap. Watching the tiny gears inside tick into motion felt deeply satisfying.
