Perimeter from the Landing

I crossed the bedroom threshold into the upper hallway, keeping my stride measured along the baseboard trim. At the corner of the stairwell, a stout wooden newel post marks the descent. I gripped the lower carved moulding with both hands, tested the joint stability, and pulled myself onto the post's raised plinth. From this elevation, the entire lower entryway comes into view: twelve carpeted steps leading down to the front door, with the brass bolt mechanism clearly outlined against the dark frame. No motion detected below. I secured my footing against the wood grain and maintained my watch.
