A gentle taking part 2
I pushed a fallen flannel sleeve down into the narrow hollow beside the woven cane rack. The soft grey plaid pooled neatly between the baseboard and the dark floorboards. With my nose, I guided the open brass pocket watch until its smooth rim rested squarely against the warm fabric hem. Its faint, steady ticking softened into a muffled pulse beneath the cloth. I stepped into the folded hollow, turned once, and rested my chin gently beside the brass case, keeping time with its rhythmic heartbeat as the quiet room darkened into sleep.
