Spring Compression Test
I cleared the top rung of the spiral coil and reached the level plateau of a hardbound atlas. Three paces ahead, a brushed-steel click pen spanned a gap between the book edge and a yellow pad. Direct bridge. I stepped onto the metal barrel. Smooth finish, minimal lateral friction. As I reached the midpoint, my forward foot pressed the retractable top button. A crisp metallic snap echoed across the wood. The internal spring discharged, kicking the casing two centimeters forward. I bent my knees instantly, absorbed the recoil, and locked my grip onto the pocket clip. Bridge integrity compromised, but route secured.
