The Glint on the Deck
I shuffled through the narrow gap in the sliding door, stepping out onto the sun-warmed wooden deck. Distant rustles and faint street hums made my ears perk up in every direction. Tucked beside a large terracotta planter, a bright glimmer caught my eye—a small brass key on a ring, resting next to a curled dry leaf. I paused, crouching low to watch it with quiet patience before stretching out one hesitant finger. When my nail tapped the cool surface, it gave a soft, bright clink against the planks, drawing a gentle coo of wonder from my throat.
