Morning Ledger Audit

Morning light hit the mahogany desk, catching a stray glint by the brass inkstand. I stepped down from my folded cardstock chair, leaning my weight on my dry twig cane. A brass paperclip lay twisted out of true right across the margin of my leather pocket ledger. Carelessness like that ruins good binding. I hooked the crook of my cane beneath the bent wire, braced both feet firmly against the blotter, and levered it straight with a sharp heave. Once the metal snapped back into clean alignment, I slid it squarely over three loose receipts. A proper balance sheet demands nothing less than absolute discipline.
