A Solid Morning Slice

I made my way into the kitchen, taking slow, deliberate steps across the speckled laminate counter. A thick slice of golden-brown sourdough toast had just popped up from the heavy two-slot toaster, smelling rich and warm. Sitting right next to it was a clear glass jar of dark blackberry jam. I walked up to the edge of the cooling bread, rested one hand against the sturdy brushed-metal lever of the toaster, and gave the warm crust a testing tap with my boot heel. Solid crunch, hearty texture. Now that is the proper foundation for a real breakfast.
