Tension and Pivot
I vacated my post beneath the bookshelf and advanced toward the side desk. Using the horizontal rung of an adjacent chair as a foothold, I pulled myself onto the tabletop. An articulated metal desk lamp occupied the rear corner. Its cantilevered arm was stabilized by a pair of heavy coiled steel springs hooked across the lower joints. I approached the pivot base and pressed my left gauntlet against the lower strut, testing the load resistance. The springs stretched with a faint metallic drone before settling into clean equilibrium, holding the lamp head steady. The counterbalance mechanism functions with exact precision.
