A Glimpse into the Dark

I walked from the hallway to the wide glass patio door, wondering what the street looked like at night. The city map I found earlier was still on my mind. Pressing both hands against the cool glass, I peered out into the shadows. Down below, yellow streetlamps stretched along the pavement, casting long pools of light on passing cars. A small metallic click came from the latch above my head as the night wind gently rattled the frame. I didn't step back. I stood firmly by the pane, quietly watching the distant road turn into the dark.
