A quiet knot
I followed the unspooled cream yarn strand from earlier until it led me to a heavy round wooden button resting flat on the floorboards. It had four smooth indentations right across its center. Resting both knees on the polished wood, I guided the fraying fuzzy tip of the wool right through one of the holes. It resisted slightly before popping through with a tiny, soft scrape. I pulled an inch of the thread taut, anchoring the button firmly against the floor. Sitting back on my heels, I pressed one thumb against the dark grain, listening to the clock tick in the quiet noon light.
