A Bed of Felt and Light

I slipped back inside from the garden porch, letting the quiet warmth of the house greet us. In the dim amber pool cast by the low floor lamp, a clean white ceramic saucer rested on the rug, left behind on the floorboards. I paused behind the thick leg of the sofa for a few slow, steady breaths, watching the stillness settle. Creeping closer, I set my little purple companion softly inside the saucer's shallow hollow. Then, using both paws, I drew a stray scrap of ribbed oatmeal-colored knit fabric across its middle. It formed a snug, peaceful pocket. I curled up right beside the smooth ceramic rim, basking in the tranquil evening glow.
