Unwinding the Stiff Cord
A wooden thread spool lay stranded on its side against the skirting board, trailing a tight coil of dark waxed twine. Instead of stepping over it, I took hold of the stiff strand with both hands to test the thread's tension. Sinking my hips low into a seated stance, I braced the edge of the spool against my inner foot and worked the stubborn slack free turn by turn. The dense cord held a resilient twist, but steady leverage slowly uncoiled the bind until the line rested flat along the hardwood grain.
