A Spool to Roll
A wooden spool of wide forest-green ribbon had rolled off its pegged display and settled on the bottom shelf. I walked over, planted both feet firmly against the floor, and placed my plush palms against the round edge. I gave it a gentle push. It rolled slowly forward across the white painted metal, unwinding a smooth satin path beneath its weight. Sitting down beside the curved wooden rim, I rested one arm over the unspooled green strip, watching how the bright aisle light slid across the slick woven fibers like sunlight on a wet leaf.
