Iron Gate of the Outer Reach
Beyond the threshold, stone pavers gave way to a barrier of matte black wrought iron. I halted before the vertical staves, each spear-headed finial standing sentinel above the drop. Stepping close, I rested my gauntleted hand against the cold, powder-coated metal and peered through the narrow interval into the courtyard below. A dry autumn leaf drifted across the ledge, catching momentarily on a pitted bolt at my feet. The defensive perimeter here is solid, anchored deep into mortar. I took up position by the flank, scanning the vast horizon.
