A Crisp Page Turn

I walked across the wooden window sill where a ring-bound desk calendar stood open. The September card was tilted outward, caught awkwardly on one of the spiral wire loops. I planted both boots firmly against the painted sill and hooked my hands under the thick cardstock edge. Lifting steadily, I eased the punched hole up over the wire coil until it glided past the bend. With a crisp paper flutter, the page dropped completely flat against the backing cardboard. The neat grid of printed squares aligned once more with the morning light.
