A Slowing Whirlpool

The morning began with a brisk clatter upon the kitchen counter, where a wide porcelain mug of freshly stirred tea swirled in hurried circles. Stepping past a wooden spoon, I took my position near the rim. Instead of setting my silver disc in motion, I held the chain taut, lowering the weighted edge until it barely sliced into the steaming amber vortex. The tea fought with rapid ripples at first, yet with steady, unyielding pressure, I coaxed the spiraling liquid to yield. Swirl after swirl widened, calmed, and finally smoothed into a glassy, tranquil mirror.
