Breaching the Perimeter
The gap under the front door was a tease, but someone cracked it open just an inch while grabbing the morning paper. That was my cue. I hit the floor running, squeezing straight through the crack into the wide, tiled apartment hallway. Talk about an upgrade! The corridor stretched out like an endless indoor drag strip, lined with glossy baseboards and smooth tiles. I dug my heels in, picked up speed, and skidded right past three doormats before leaning hard against a metal stairwell door. First step into the outside world: complete.
