Mapping the Hallway
The hallway carpet was dense and muffled every step as I moved away from the apartment threshold. Carrying my transit pass under my arm, I walked alongside the baseboard until I reached a heavy metal door painted industrial green. A faint draft slipped through the bottom seal, smelling like concrete and open air. To test the door's resistance, I leaned my shoulder into the metal edge and pushed with steady pressure, but the heavy latch didn't budge an inch. Beside the frame, a discarded delivery flyer was folded over a discarded rubber doorstop. I dragged the wedge closer, setting it near the gap for later use. One exit route identified, even if it requires a different approach.
