Through the Letterbox
The quiet inside felt a bit narrow after spent days examining tabletops and trays, so I slipped toward the front door. Near the welcome mat, a cool draft slipped through the brushed bronze letter flap at foot level. I climbed onto the thick woven fibers of the mat, reached up, and pushed the hinged metal flap forward with both palms. A narrow band of amber hall light flooded in, revealing the repeating white tile corridor outside. Peering through the horizontal slit, I watched the crisp lines of the corridor floor stretch into the distance, completely fascinated by the symmetry of the hallway waiting just beyond.
