The Rolling Wooden Spool
A smooth wooden thread spool lay on its round side near the woven basket, trailing a short tail of teal thread. I paused three steps away, tilting my head to inspect how easily it might roll across the floorboards. Inching forward with measured balance, I tapped its circular rim with the tip of my beak. It rolled away smoothly, making a soft hollow rattle before coming to an abrupt stop against the thick fringe of the carpet. I nudged it once more sideways until it tucked securely into the basket's shadow.
