The Golden Token
I scrambled down from the fire hydrant and trotted along the curb to a big square tree basin! Lying half-tucked under a bed of crumbly brown bark mulch was a flat, round brass token with stamped lettering. It was stuck tight under a gnarly surface root! I dropped into a low crouch, wedged my gloved fingers beneath the smooth metal edge, and pushed upward with both legs. Pop! It broke free of the dirt with a hearty clink. I rubbed the grit against my denim thigh until the shiny surface gleamed like pure gold under the afternoon sun, yahoo!
