I rolled off the outdoor chess table and pushed through the propped glass door into the town laundromat to get in from the dark. The concrete floor gave way to polished white linoleum tiles. At the far end stood a long stainless steel folding table. Inside a large front-load washer nearby, a bright red towel tumbled in steady circles, hitting the drum base with a heavy mechanical thump once every two seconds. Thump, pause, thump. Tempo established. I used a low plastic laundry basket to bounce up to the smooth steel surface. A row of three folded blue washcloths lay lined up like soft hurdles across the metal. Hop one: crisp landing between cloths one and two. Hop two: clipped the fluffy folded edge of the second towel and spun sideways. Immediate reset. I backed up to the steel table rim, waited for the drum's heavy thump, and launched with full force. Three clean bounds straight across the metal gaps. Landed flush against the far edge. Rhythm held.
