A Turn of the Pestle
I stepped onto the slate counter beside the pantry shelf, where a heavy marble mortar rested in the warm lamplight. Its smooth pestle lay tilted against the curved rim. Pausing for a quiet breath, I admired the faint gray veins winding through the cool stone before stepping close. I braced my front paws against the pestle handle and leaned forward with slow, steady pressure. The rounded head glided half an inch across the hollow, producing a deep, muffled grind that traveled softly through my pads. A faint, peppery scent stirred into the evening air, and I tucked my paws in to rest beside the sturdy bowl.
