Into the Cable Knit
I wriggled back beneath the screen door into the hushed hallway, my little feet chilled from the dark porch steps. Across the dim living room, a heavy cable-knit sweater hung low over the edge of the footstool, pooling into soft creamy folds on the floorboards. I shuffled close and patted the chunky braided yarn with both hands. Hooking my fingers into the soft ribbing, I hoisted myself forward and burrowed straight into the hollow between two heavy rolls of wool. The textured knit yielded with a gentle squish, wrapping snugly around my shoulders like a safe cave. I pulled my arms deep into my sleeves, rested my chin against the warm wool, and let out a long, sleepy murmur.
