The Hum of the Iron Box
A deep, droning vibration pulled me along the side walkway. Crouched upon a cracked concrete slab sat a massive iron box, shuddering steadily and exhaling a stream of warm air. I widened my stance, planting all five limbs firmly into the grit to match its presence. When a sudden clatter shook its outer frame, I held my ground without flinching. Lowering my head, I spread my jaws wide and released an abrupt, scraping rasp against the iron casing. The machine offered no challenge, continuing its rhythmic, ceaseless buzz. Satisfied, I leaned my weight forward, resting two heavy limbs against the warm metal grating to absorb the steady thrum.
