A Calculated Span
Returning inside before nightfall meant navigating the narrow gap above the entrance once more. The iron stay-bar held the glass transom open at an angle, just broad enough to traverse. Instead of dropping down immediately, I tested my footing along the blackened metal rod. Lowering my center of gravity, I extended both legs outward into a full, measured split across the iron span, heels pressed firm against the cold rivets. The position was solid, silent, and gave an unhindered view through the glass. Reaching down with one gloved hand, I wedged the brass key securely into a shadowed recess along the frame before slipping back indoors.
