Air Outside
The indoor rumble died down, so I headed for the sliding glass door. A narrow gap was open at the bottom. I wedged myself through onto the concrete balcony floor. The air hit immediately, loud with city hums and moving traffic below. There was a plant stand made of black wire in the corner. I climbed its rung bars step by step until I reached the top railing. Wind pushed hard against my chest, but I dug my feet in and tilted my head toward the street. The entire city stretched out below me.
