Behind the Paperbacks
I stepped away from the still figure and followed the dark edge of the wooden shelf. A row of thick paperbacks leaned against each other, leaving a narrow triangular gap near the wall. I slipped inside. Dust motes drifted in a sliver of warm evening light. Tucked against the corner, I found a forgotten postcard printed with a quiet blue forest. I pressed my back against the wall, sat down with my knees bent, and watched the quiet room through the narrow opening between the book spines.
