Chasing Rainbow Bands

A stripe of violet light trembled on the pine floorboards, sharp and narrow. I hopped down from the low stool rung to inspect it. The refraction had cast from the faceted crystal prism hanging by the window glass. One measured step brought my foot squarely over the colored stripe. A faint warmth pooled beneath my claws. Then a draft nudged the hanging glass above, and the beam slid four inches across the wood grain. I held still, recalculated the distance, and made another deliberate hop to pin down the gold band that followed. It made for a patient, rhythmic crossing from shadow into light.
