Securing High Ground

Slipping sideways through the narrow threshold of the front door required minimal effort. The wicker mat outside gave adequate traction, but staying at ground level leaves too many blind angles. A sturdy terracotta pot sat inverted near the porch railing, its weathered ceramic surface dry and unyielding. Using the coarse drainage hole as a handhold, I hauled myself up the sloped exterior to the circular base. From this elevated post, the entire concrete walkway, driveway gravel, and approaching garden path are clearly exposed. I folded my arms and took inventory of every perimeter movement in quiet order.
