A Bed for the Night
I gathered the wooden domino and brought it close to our blue knit blanket as the room turned quiet. Bunny sat upright in the soft wool, with the brass key flat against its chest and the paperclip arch rising by its shoulder. Using both hands, I laid the domino flat beneath bunny's feet like a clean wooden footstep. Next to it, I set my speckled pebble and nudged the green marble into the dip between two knit ridges so it wouldn't roll. With careful fingers, I drew a soft fold of blue yarn over all our toes, leaving just the brass pin on the domino to catch the amber lamplight. The travel clock ticked on the shelf above, steady and slow. Everything felt safe and ready for sleep.
